EssilorLuxottica 2025: the report reshaping the eyewear market
€28.5 billion in revenue, med-tech transformation, smart eyewear and the training paradox. Alessandra Salimbene analyses the EssilorLuxottica 2025 report and explains why for the independent optician the real defence is a unique positioning.
EssilorLuxottica has published its 2025 report and I've read and analysed it for you. We're talking about a giant that reached a record €28.5 billion in revenue, growing at double digits. But this isn't just a list of numbers for shareholders: it's the geographic and strategic map of the market where you, as an independent optician, compete every day.
The med-tech and smart eyewear metamorphosis
The report highlights how EssilorLuxottica is completing its transformation: from traditional manufacturer to a med-tech and data-driven powerhouse. Two crucial fronts open up for your business.
1. The smart eyewear revolution. With the second generation of Ray-Ban Meta and the launch of Nuance Audio, glasses are becoming intelligent platforms with integrated acoustics. This isn't futuristic technology: it's a real product category that attracts a new, high-spending audience to your store.
2. Clinical and preventive excellence. The Stellest platform for managing and preventing childhood myopia, together with diagnostic acquisitions like Heidelberg Engineering and RetinAI, shift the axis toward predictive medicine and oculomics. The message is clear: pure product sales are no longer enough — you must elevate the clinical journey of the customer-patient.
The training paradox: the strategic turning point
We come to the hottest point in the report, the one that touches your staff's daily management: training. EssilorLuxottica declares it has delivered over 12 million hours of training since 2021, of which 4.2 million in 2025 alone through its Leonardo platform. A colossal investment — proof that training today is fundamental to staying in the market.
But there's a huge 'but' you must consider. This training, however technical and high-quality, is inevitably 'biased'.
Its implicit strategic purpose is to homogenise the language between the independent optician and the group's own stores. If you use their same words, follow their same sales schemes and adopt their same lexicon, you become indistinguishable. And if you become indistinguishable, the end consumer will always choose the biggest brand or the lowest price.
The role of the independent optician
For the independent optician, the real defence and the key to growth is creating a personalised training plan. A specific path that belongs only to your brand, that builds a proprietary lexicon for your optical store and defines an inimitable positioning in your territory.
You can't afford to delegate your staff's identity to an external, standardised provider.
My proposal
I am Alessandra Salimbene. As a specialised consultant and trainer, with 30 years of on-the-field experience alongside vision professionals, I work on exactly this every day: I help independent opticians build unique positioning strategies and train their teams with a proprietary language that gives confidence, seals customer trust and grows business margins — even in a competitive landscape dominated by giants.
The 2025 report tells us the market is moving fast, but the opportunities for those who know how to position themselves are extraordinary. Don't let yourself be homogenised.
If you want to understand how to apply these strategies and create a unique training path for your store, book a first strategic consultation.
