EssilorLuxottica 2025: the report reshaping the eyewear market
€28.5 billion in revenue, a med-tech transformation, smart eyewear and the training paradox. Alessandra Salimbene reads the EssilorLuxottica 2025 report and explains why, for the independent optician, the real defence is a positioning of your own.
20 minEssilorLuxottica has published its 2025 report, and I have read and analysed it for you. We are talking about a group that reached a record €28.5 billion in revenue, with double-digit growth at constant exchange rates. But this is not just a list of numbers for shareholders: it is the geographic and strategic map of the market in which you, as an independent optician, compete every day.
The year in numbers
Revenue in 2025 rose to €28.5 billion, +11.2% at constant exchange rates and +7.5% at current rates compared with €26.5 billion in 2024, with a fourth quarter at €7.6 billion (+18.4%). The adjusted operating margin stands at 16.0%, down 70 basis points at constant exchange rates: US tariffs and the mix of AI glasses, which today earn less than traditional products, weigh on it. Net profit is €2.32 billion (−1.9%); free cash flow is €2.8 billion, up by €400 million.

The med-tech and smart eyewear metamorphosis
The report describes a transformation that is now complete: from traditional manufacturer to a med-tech, data-driven power. Two fronts open up that directly concern your business.
1. Smart eyewear is a category, not an experiment
With the second generation of Ray-Ban Meta and the launch of Nuance Audio, glasses are becoming intelligent platforms with integrated audio. This is not futuristic technology: it is a real product category that brings a new, high-spending audience into your practice. I also wrote about it in Smart but independent.
2. The clinic becomes the playing field
The Stellest platform for managing and preventing childhood myopia, together with diagnostic acquisitions such as Heidelberg Engineering and RetinAI, shift the axis towards predictive medicine and oculomics. The message is clear: selling the product alone is no longer enough; you have to raise the clinical journey of the customer-patient.
The training paradox
We come to the hottest point in the report, the one that touches the daily management of your team: training. EssilorLuxottica states that it has delivered more than 12 million hours of training since 2021, 4.2 million of them in 2025 alone, through its Leonardo platform. An enormous investment, and proof that training is now a condition for staying in the market.
Training in the report
Training hours delivered by the group through the Leonardo platform.
There is a huge "but" to consider: this training, however technical and high in quality, is inevitably partisan.
Its implicit strategic purpose is to make the language of the independent optician the same as that of the group’s own stores. If you use their words, follow their sales patterns and adopt their lexicon, you become indistinguishable. And once you are indistinguishable, the end customer will always choose the bigger brand or the lower price. It is the same mechanism I describe in Communication in optical retail: the problem is not reaching, it is being understood.
The independent optician’s defence
For the independent optician, the real defence, and the key to growth, is building a personalised training plan: a path that belongs to your practice alone, that builds a proprietary lexicon for your business and defines a positioning in your area that nobody can copy. You cannot afford to delegate your team’s identity to an external, standardised provider.
My proposal
As a specialised consultant and trainer, with 30 years of experience alongside eye care professionals, I work on exactly this every day: I help independent opticians build positioning strategies of their own and train their teams with a proprietary language that gives confidence, protects customer trust and grows margins, even in a market dominated by giants. It is the work of in-practice training and of the Academy, within the frame of training for opticians; for practices outside Italy, it is the work of The Charismatic Practice.
The 2025 report tells us the market is moving fast, but that the opportunities for those who know how to position themselves are great. Do not let yourself be homogenised. To read the same market from another group’s side, see the analysis of HOYA’s Integrated Report 2025.
If you want to understand how to apply these strategies and create a training path of your own for your practice, book a first call.
If this theme concerns a decision for your optical practice or a company project, the first step is a call: we start from your context.
