Eyemage: the consultative sales manual for prescription eyewear and visual solutions

Alessandra Salimbene’s third manual is devoted to consultative selling in optics. The Eyemage protocol transforms the role of the optician from simple retailer to consultant in vision and image.

I am pleased to present my third manual, Eyemage. The consultative sales manual for prescription eyewear and visual solutions, published by UnPlanned Srls, Asti, in the Vendere in Ottica series (ISBN 978-88-943691-5-1). It is deeply complementary to the previous ones, Il Centro Ottico Carismatico (2023) and L’Optometrista Carismatico (2024), and focuses on the last moment of truth in optical selling: the direct, one-to-one, in-person relationship between the prospective customer and the sales assistant. The book is in Italian.

For years I have studied how the ability to build a positive, effective personal relationship can make any marketing effort succeed or fail. This manual comes from the need to reorganise ideas and provide a guided path, while keeping an "UnPlanned" style: a formula that draws a direction without binding you rigidly to the route. I have never believed in infallible methods that claim to catalogue people and make relationships reproducible.

The heart of consultative selling: beyond the script

The Eyemage protocol, the heart of this manual, changes the way optics is sold. Its mission is to raise the role of the optician from simple retailer to consultant in vision and image, able to interpret the customer’s needs not only technically, but aesthetically and emotionally too.

You will not find technical instructions in this manual on how a frame should fit, but rather a journey that connects souls, builds stories and leads to the key of every real sale: the customer’s heart. The protocol rests on precise values and on moving beyond purely transactional selling, focused on the economic exchange. It moves to consultative selling, based on listening and on building a relationship of trust, in which the seller acts as a guide.

The three pillars of the Eyemage method

  1. The customer is the hero of the story, always. Consultative selling sees the customer as the protagonist who walks into the practice with an obstacle to overcome: a visual problem, an aesthetic desire, an identity crisis tied to ageing. The optician-seller acts as the mentor, and the glasses become the magic object that lets the hero evolve and improve their life.
  2. Sell to the heart, explain to the mind. Neuroscience confirms that most purchase decisions are made on an emotional basis, with System 1, while rationality steps in afterwards to justify the choice, with System 2. The Eyemage seller must know how to activate the customer’s emotional response, for instance by drawing on self-esteem or identity, and then reinforce that choice with sustainable reasons: technical data, quality, long-term benefits. It is the principle of Emotion-driven decisions.
  3. 3D performance. Success in selling depends on the balance between three elements: competence (the what, product knowledge), communication (the how, know-how, empathy and language) and motivation (the why, inner drive). Analogue communication, that is, non-verbal language, is decisive for tuning in to the customer’s emotions.

The protocol step by step: high-ticket opticians

The protocol is designed to make high-ticket opticians. That does not simply mean selling expensive products, but offering visual solutions with a high perceived value, moving away from competition on price. The method unfolds in three phases, ideally in an appointment, experienced as a professional consultation.

Phase 1. Observation and active listening: "You matter to me"

You break the ice with small talk to build trust. You go beyond the standard requests to understand the customer’s lifestyle, real and latent needs, and expectations.

Phase 2. Analysis and personalisation: "I want to know you better"

You combine the aesthetic analysis, without relying rigidly on colour analysis or standard rules, with the customer’s personality and specific visual needs. The proposal has to be consistent with the person’s character and expressive wishes, as I describe in Identity and belonging.

Phase 3. Presentation and involvement: "I offer you your magic objects"

The goal is to propose a visual wardrobe, multiple pairs, removing the limiting idea of the "second pair". Every solution should be presented as an integral part of the customer’s image and lifestyle, turning the glasses into a talisman that solves not only the functional problem but also the person’s deeper wish: confidence, authority. The final proposals should be four at most, and complementary to each other, to avoid cognitive overload.

This manual is an invitation to turn the act of choosing glasses into a memorable and meaningful experience.

Happy reading, and good work.
